hay ladies!
This is a blog about sex, gender and feminism in Texas. It was borne of love for righteous internet activism, Twitter hashtags and beer. And whiskey. And cats. It is mainly written and edited by Austin journalist and anthropologist Andrea Grimes because she loves to put off real-life responsibilities in favor of blogging. Fellow contributors include graduate students, journalists and corporate shills writing under assumed names. We are always looking for more voices.
If you're a Texan interested in writing with us, please e-mail Andrea at (her first name dot her last name) at gmail.com.
hay, contributing ladies!

Monday Roundup Y’all
Relevant to your interests: Dallasite Nancy Upton went on the Today show and balled it up talking about American Apparel. There’s video! Why is everyone just now coming around to this Wayne Christian quote admitting anti-choicers are not just against … Continue reading
Texas Sex and Gender News Roundup
It’s Tuesday. And you know what that means. Don’t you? Because I don’t. Someone please tell me. Biggish news: the Silsbee, TX cheerleader who was forced to cheer on her rapist and then pay the school district’s court fees, may … Continue reading
Texas Sex And Gender News Roundup
Is it michelada:30 yet? No? It’s not even 10:00 a.m.? Ugh. How the Texas health care system is “withering” under Rick Perry. A serial child rapist from Saginaw has been sentenced to life in prison, plus twenty years. Gov. Perry … Continue reading

Texas Sex and Gender News Roundup
Who watched the GOP debate last night? I didn’t. I ate fish sticks and watched the Tudors instead. I like my douchey despots dressed in old-timey clothes. Here’s the news: Warren Jeffs, child rapist, wants a new trial. Rick Perry … Continue reading
Dallas County Crime Lab Whistleblower Speaks Out
In this month’s D Magazine, I talked to Dr. Chris Nulf, a former Dallas County Crime Lab scientist who says the lab is mismanaged and uses expired chemicals to processes forensic kits. It’s not a strictly feminist piece, but in … Continue reading

Texas Sex And Gender News Roundup: Terrible Shithead Edition
So look, y’all, I know I’ve been a terrible shithead lately with posting hardly any feminist things at all and concentrating most of my writing efforts on, well, something as comparatively fluffy and fleeting (and to be fair, juicy, pun … Continue reading
Why Punishing People Doesn’t Make Us Great Texans
[Readers, please welcome Katherine Craft to Hay Ladies! She's an Austin-dwelling activist who runs a badass theatre program for incarcerated women. In this guest post, she talks about why Texas' "Don't Mess" image shouldn't be a point of pride if … Continue reading
