hay ladies!
This is a blog about sex, gender and feminism in Texas. It was borne of love for righteous internet activism, Twitter hashtags and beer. And whiskey. And cats. It is mainly written and edited by Austin journalist and anthropologist Andrea Grimes because she loves to put off real-life responsibilities in favor of blogging. Fellow contributors include graduate students, journalists and corporate shills writing under assumed names. We are always looking for more voices.
If you're a Texan interested in writing with us, please e-mail Andrea at (her first name dot her last name) at gmail.com.

[Ed. note: Last week we reposted a piece by Nan about her frustration with the North Texas PBS affiliate, KERA, which thanked her for her donation by, well, erasing her by privileging her husband's name over her own. They blamed it … Continue reading

Breaking News From The Mo’Fuckery And Bullshit Desk
I don’t know, I guess all women’s health news should just be reclassified through the Mo’Fuckery And Bullshit Desk. Emily Ramshaw at the Texas Tribune reports that Texas has now officially banned Planned Parenthood from receiving federal women’s health funds … Continue reading
The Plight of the Married Lady
[Ed. note: This post by contributor Nan originally appeared "In honor of Valentine's Day," on her blog, Behind the Times. She's graciously allowed us to repost it on Hay Ladies! Thanks, Nan.] Dallas’ public radio station, KERA, recently ran a … Continue reading

Backlash Against Forced Transvaginal Ultrasound Laws Gain Steam
Irin Carmon over at Salon addresses the increasing political and pop-culture backlash against forced transvaginal ultrasound laws, which we are all too familiar with now here in Texas. (Well, we’re familiar with the laws, less so the backlash, since ugh, … Continue reading

Breaking News From The Mo’Fuckery And Bullshit Desk
First, the goodish news: ultrasounds don’t actually do shit to coerce women not to have abortions, they’re just a stupid hassle. From the American Independent: But as more states inject mandatory ultrasound policies into their abortion laws, a group of … Continue reading

Hitched: What Does It Mean To Be A Wife?
In this week’s “Hitched” column for The Frisky, I wonder on the question, “What does it mean to be a wife?” For me, the term “wife” isn’t a necessarily positive one. And yet here I am on a one-way track … Continue reading
