Here’s a little mainstream victim-blaming for your Thursday sads: a Dallas woman went out to grab something from her garage freezer last week, saw that the ice box was empty, and turned to find herself being choked and raped by, presumably, one of the two men stealing her food. Police have no leads and no suspects in custody.
Lucky for the DPD, commenter Daniel White knows exactly who the culprit is: this woman who brought rape upon herself by idiotically leaving her garage door open, because everybody knows people who leave their garage doors open get raped. His comment is the second-most “liked” on the Fox4 web story thread:
This cloud has a silver lining: at least this woman who was raped in her own garage will no longer think that she lives in Canada!
Andrea, you have to consider the source: a Fox4 viewer.
I remember maybe ten years ago there was a string of sexual assaults in Plano in the get-out-the-door-in-the-morning rush. The perp would watch the husband drive out of the garage, then go inside the garage and close the door, waiting for the wife to come out of the house and into the garage alone. There are f’d up people in the world.
I will be the last person on earth to defend Fox, but sadly I don’t think that these kinds of beliefs are limited to the right-wing viewing crowd. Rape culture is rape culture. I wish it were different.
This makes me so angry. I honestly don’t know what we can do to change the culture of victim-blaming; it doesn’t matter if it’s a woman who left her garage door open, a maid at a hotel, or a journalist covering overseas events. It always comes down to blaming the victim for their (perceived) behavior. Aghhh!!!
